On the Road Again: Hot Joy in San Antonio

Wednesday, April 13, 2016
Sometimes you order food at a restaurant that you didn't even want in the first place, and it ends up being one of the top three best decisions of your life.

Maybe I'm being a *tad* dramatic. And also a little bit accurate.

At the end of March, Jon and I visited our friends Mark and Kelly in San Antonio. As always, we had a great time, and they took us to some of the best restaurants in town. One such restaurant was Hot Joy, located on San Antonio's beyond-cool South Alamo Street.

The Texan-Asian restaurant (how's that for the most ideal fusion of foods ever??) houses an interior that's a bright, eclectic mix of edgy, Asian-inspired decor. We opted to sit on some comfy couches near open windows in the restaurant's lounge, which overlooked the lively San Antonio scene around us.

To start the meal off right, I ordered a glass of rosé (I've really been on a #RoséAllDay kick lately). Mark let me have a sip of his wasabi pineapple mule, which was light, refreshing, not too sweet, and had a little kick to it!

For our first round of food, we ordered roasted edamame and tater to chaat to share.

The roasted edamame came with a miso garlic butter (which we asked to have on the side since I was eating a vegan diet at the time), and tograshi salt. I just ate the the pods plain, and they were your standard edamame for the most part, but with a fun charring on the shells from the roasting process.

The tater tot chaat was my absolute jam. Fluffy tots were tossed in tamarind ketchup, paneer (which we asked for on the side to make vegan), chutney crema (also requested as a side), Indian snack mix, and cilantro. Y'all, these were SO GOOD. The tamarind ketchup created a barbecue sauce effect, and the Indan snack mix added a wonderful crunch to every bite. The dish was super savory and super indulgent, and I honestly didn't miss the paneer or chutney crema! I was a big fan of these mighty tots.

I consulted our incredibly friendly and attentive server about my final round of food. The menu has several naturally vegetarian items, but opting for vegan is a little trickier. What I really wanted was some stir fried Thai noodles, but they contained a fish sauce that was necessary for the dish. Essentially my only option was to order the double miso ramen without egg. I was pretty disappointed.

Until I ate it.

What happened next was me experiencing the best ramen I have ever had. Not in the past year. Not in San Antonio. Ever. As in, During the course of my life here on Planet Earth. I know, I know, give me a break, Kim. But seriously! This food-glorious-food bowl of hot joy <~~~ (see what I did there?) was absolutely outstanding. All of the ingredients were phenomenal: silky, buttery noodles; chewy, hearty shiitakes; tart, charred baby corn; fragrant burnt garlic oil; and a sensuous miso broth base. These out-of-this-world components created a serious flavor explosion, and I clung dearly to every bite. It was a wonderful, blissful accident that this was the entree I stumbled into.

If you're traveling to San Antonio, Hot Joy is one restaurant that can't be missed. The food is interesting, vibrant, and delicious, the atmosphere is fun, and the service is fantastic. I am incredibly happy we went there during our most recent visit to San Antonio!

Vacation Days: San Antonio, March 2016

Let's go to the Hill Country, shall we?

New Braunfels, Texas

^ (umm, how hard am I kicking myself that I missed that Stone Temples Pilot tribute though?)

Jon and I both had off work on Good Friday, so we decided to visit our close friends Mark and Kelly for the weekend. You may recall that these two lovebirds got married last October, and we had a wonderful time celebrating with them! Our trip to see them in March was an awesome couple of days (as it always is when we go up there to visit them), so I'd like to share some photos of my weekend of food and fun with you!

Jon and I hit the road early on Friday morning and stopped by Torchy's at their restaurant located in the Heights on our way out for some breakfast tacos. When we arrived at Mark and Kelly's house, which is located just outside of San Antonio, we headed out to New Braunfels for lunch at The Phoenix Saloon in New Braunfels.

This "Could you be any more wonderfully charming and Texan?" restaurant/bar had a vegan chili that was hearty and WONDERFUL. I also ordered some fantastically seasoned sweet potato fries for good measure. The food got high marks from everyone at the table, including the classic frito pie Kelly ordered.

After that, we walked over to 2Tarts, an adorable bakery that - I was happy to learn - had vegan lemon cupcakes!

The cupcake was super moist and dense, and certainly had a different consistency than what I was used to. It had a wonderful flavor, and I definitely dug it!

After that, we popped over to a really cool outdoor bar in New Braunfels called Pour Haus.

Kelly and I swung on the swings for a bit, #natch.

(Those women at the swings in the photo aren't us, btw. I realized it may have seemed that way based on my caption.)

Then we bought groceries to grill out on their patio for dinner, which was lovely.

On Saturday morning, we stopped by the beyond-cute Emily's Place for some pastries and coffee (only coffee for me since I was still eating vegan and had brought a protein bar along).

Don't you just want to grab the nearest person and marry them in front of those doors right now?!

I mean, really.

After that, we grabbed food from H-E-B to enjoy a picnic lunch at our all-time favorite winery ever, La Cruz de Comal, located in Canyon Lake.

Once we were finished eating our food and drinking our wine, we headed into San Antonio. Our first stop was The Friendly Spot, a super cool outdoor bar/restaurant, located on San Antonio's quirky, hipster, and happenin' South Alamo Street.

Once we had been there for a while, soaking in the beautiful weather and fun scene, we walked just across the street to the restaurant Hot Joy for dinner. The food there was so incredible, it's getting it's own blog post - so more on that later!

After dinner, while driving from San Antonio back to Mark and Kelly's house, we took a detour and partook in everyone's favorite past time - Bingo!

It was a fantastic weekend of beautiful weather, fun times with great friends, and fabulous food in San Antonio - Thanks for following along!

Vacation Days: San Antonio, August 2015

Friday, September 4, 2015
Last month I went away for a long weekend to San Antonio to attend the wedding of a close family friend. I managed to get some major food time in, so of course I'd like to share it with you all!

First order of business:

I arrived just in time for lunch, so my parents and I went straight to The Esquire Tavern on the River Walk. This historic tavern opened in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition. It's divey inside, yet swanky, with puffy booths, exposed concrete walls, and taxidermed animals scattered throughout. Because we are Ogonoskys, the three of us started off with martinis, which to be honest weren't the greatest. Apparently the vermouth they use comes sweetened, so if you don't ask for UNsweetened vermouth, you get the sweetened kind by default, which I'm not used to (nor a fan of). I still drank mine, but would have preferred it unsweetened.

The food though, was much better! We started off with the tacos con papas: MASHED POTATOES (omg.), chili coleslaw, and salsa verde inside three crispy taco shells. Yes, they were absolutely as incredible and sinful as they sound! For my entree I ordered the grilled pimento cheese sandwich with avocado, and it was pretty good - Incredibly melty and gooey, which hit the spot. The chili salt fries weren't my favorite fries ever, but they were a unique departure from the norm.

The wedding was at the St. Anthony Hotel, which is also where we stayed. And it was lovely.

Our first night there I had dinner with my parents and friends Lindsey and Caleb at Citrus, located on the River Walk in the Valencia Hotel. While the food was extremely good, we were a little confused to find that the ONLY option we had for dinner was to dine off of their San Antonio Restaurant Weeks menu, which was a set of family style dishes. When we made our reservations, we were not informed of this. This was a little disconcerting since we had a high maintenance vegetarian in our group (me. I'm talking about me.), and sharing plates from a small [meat heavy] menu can be tricky. Fortunately it did all work out, and everything I ate (Texas watermelon salad, crispy tofu and vegetables in a Thai basil lemongrass broth, a side of sauteed vegetables, and assorted ice cream) was wonderful. Especially the tofu with vegetables - It was creamy, thick, zingy, indulgent, and lovely!

My parents have decided to build a house to retire in out in New Braunfels, so we (my parents, my sister Emily, and Emily's boyfriend Danny) spent Saturday morning looking at their beautiful land, followed by a trip to the super cool, historic Pearl District for lunch at Boiler House. We started off with a burrata appetizer. The toast served with it was smokey, fluffy, and exceptionally good, but the burrata itself - while tasty - was comical in that there hardly was any! The toast to burrata ratio was absurd. We were technically there for brunch, and since there weren't really any veg-friendly savory entrees, I pieced together a meal of their zucchini, quinoa, and golden raisins side dish, as well as the young beets, feta, oregano, and olive oil plate. Both were playful and flavorful, and served as a great, light lunch to have before the wedding. Overall it was a decent meal, but I'd probably try a different restaurant out next time.

I didn't take pics at the wedding because I was obviously cutting a rug on the dance for the whole time.

The next morning my parents and I had breakfast at the St. Anthony on their lovely, airy, enclosed patio before heading back home!

While none of the meals I had completely blew my socks off as a whole, Esquire Tavern's tacos con papas and Citrus' crispy tofu and vegetables were total rockstar dishes and far and away the major standouts of the trip!

Until next time, San Antonio/NewBraunfels/Hill Country!

(Next month. I'll be there next month.)
