Vacation Days: West Hartford & Beyond

Tuesday, October 11, 2016
Hey there, stranger!

New England Brewing Co. - A brewery near New Haven, Connecticut

Yes, it's been almost a month since you've heard from me, and it's due to three things:

1) I'm planning a wedding. If you haven't gathered from this blog, I am a super Type A, organized planner of a person, and whenever people had previously told me how stressful and difficult and crazy it is to plan a wedding, I always thought, "I believe it, but how bad is it really?" Well the Wedding Planning Gods are now laughing their faces off at me, because y'all? It's seriously a lot of work. It's fun, don't get me wrong! But a massive time-suck. Bear with me through these next six months. (Because eek! I decided it'd be a good idea to only give myself SIX MONTHS to plan a wedding!)

2) I'm quietly cleansing. Well I guess it's not so quiet since I'm announcing it on my blog. I did a lot of traveling last month that entailed eating indulgent (albeit DELICIOUS) food, as well as *slightly* over-imbibing some of the alcohols. So I'm on day 10 of a modified vegetarian Whole30 (allowing myself tofu, beans, quinoa, and permission to not be a total spaz when I actually do go to restaurants) in order to clean myself out a bit. But only for 20 days because I value my sanity. (Also, my sister will be in town on Day 21, and we have champagne plans <~~~ Real reason). But this means I'm not really eating out at new restaurants a whole bunch, so there's a lack of content for the blog. Whomp whomp.

3) I traveled more than I was home last month. I'm still catching up on everything after a trip to Disney World, a work trip to New Orleans, a work trip to Vermont, and a trip to West Hartford, Connecticut.

What's that, you say? Can I share more about my trip to Connecticut? I thought you'd never ask.

Jon and I visited our close friends Lenny and Christy in West Hartford towards the end of September. This was tacked on to the tail end of our trip to Vermont. West Hartford is adorable and charming and filled with great food, restaurants, and bars. When Jon and I arrived, Christy took us to the laid back restaurant Max Burger for lunch.

I ordered The Grateful Veg with a fried egg on top and a side of baby broccoli. The restaurant's housemade quinoa-sunflower seed burger was topped with cheddar cheese, shaved red onion, roasted tomato, baby arugula, green goddess dressing, and avocado. This was one OUTSTANDING veggie burger, filled with unique textures and mouthwatering flavors! Lenny joined up with us after he finished work, and we headed over to happy hour at the open, airy, and pretty Max's Oyster Bar (same owners as the burger spot!). We enjoyed some bubbly champagne and oysters (I opted out of the oysters because, #shellfish).

After freshening up and hanging out for a bit at L and C's house, we headed out to dinner at the Italian restaurant Treva in West Hartford.

Our super engaging server was born and raised in Italy and full of fun, informative facts! We started off with a delicious bottle of red wine, and some of the restaurant's complimentary rustic bread with olive oil.

For our first round of food, we ordered the restaurant's burrata.

burrata at Treva - a restaurant in West Hartford, Connecticut

I adore burrata, and this one ranks high on my list. The inside of the cheese gave off a textured, almost cottage cheese-like consistency. The flavor was light and slightly tangy, and paired wonderfully with some roasted peppers and arugula salad. It was delicious!

For the next round of food, we split the arancini.

Another crowd-pleaser, these golden-fried rice balls were stuffed with luxardo cherries and more delicious burrata. The sweet/salty combo that resulted was lovely!

For my final round of food, I couldn't not order the restaurant's tonnarelli cacio e pepe.

(If you know of my love affair with Coltivare's version, you understand why).

Treva's version was a bit heartier, with thicker noodles and a more syrupy olive oil. It was smooth, simple, and really wonderful!

The next day was our day of hopping around (aka eating food around) the state of Connecticut AND Massachusetts! We started off with breakfast at Goldberg's in West Hartford (as recommended to me by my friend Lauren).

I ordered a jalapeño cheddar everything bagel with scallion cream cheese (say that ten times fast), and it was EVERYTHING. Fluffy, oozy, melty, tangy, spicy, and absolutely GLORIOUS, eating it was essentially a religious experience.

After that, we headed to New England Brewing Co. near New Haven to taste some local beers!

I'm not even anywhere close to being any sort of beer expert, but these beers were REALLY good. And the tasting space was small, but super fun!

After that we decided we hadn't had enough bread, so we were off to the restaurant Frank Pepe for some authentic New Haven pizza!

We ordered a tasty house salad, which meant the whole experience was healthy of course.

For our main course of food, we split two pies: One was half tomato pie/half mozzarella, while the other was half pepperoni/half mushroom, garlic, and onion. New Haven pizza really is in its own category of pizza. It's a thinner, crispier, slightly sweeter version of New York pizza, and I really really enjoyed it! The mozzarella pizza was a nice introduction to this style of pizza, but the tomato pie and the mushroom/garlic/onion versions were tied as my favorites. While other tomato pies I've had in the past had no cheese at all, Frank Pepe's version had a very small amount, which allowed the sweet tomato sauce to shine without being overpowering. And the veggie pizza was simply outstanding. The caramelized veggies were wonderful atop the crispy, almost-burnt crust! I even had some later that night (and maybe accidentally bit into a pepperoni that somehow ended up on my slice? Oops. I didn't freak out too much though).

After we had finished filling ourselves up on [more] bread and beer, we headed up (over? down? I'm terrible at geography) to Worcester, Massachusetts to see the band We & Mrs. Jones play at Nick's (fun fact, a scene from American Hustle was filmed there!). L and C's friend Madelyn is the lead singer of the band, and she is AWESOME.

We & Mrs. Jones playing at Nick's - a bar in Worcester, Massachusetts

Actually, we got to witness one of her final shows before going into retirement to have a baby! It was so seriously great.

martini at Nick's - a bar in Worcester, Massachusetts
pretzel at Nick's - a bar in Worcester, Massachusetts

I sipped on a sturdy martini ('natch), and we also ordered some food to share - a giant pretzel, along with a no-frills cheese plate. The pretzel came with a side of - wait for it - CREAM CHEESE, which seriously completed my life. The cheese plate was massive, and really just what we needed (MORE CARBS).

The next day, Jon and I headed back home to Houston, but not before stopping at Total Wine, the rest of the country's response to Spec's. And it was glorious.

And that concludes our trip! It was a whirlwind of an awesome weekend with great friends, great food, and great fun in West Hartford and beyond!

I should probably have some more bread now.

Vacation Days: Austin, May 2016 (Part One)

Tuesday, May 24, 2016
The title of this post says "Part One" because even though I haven't been to Austin in 2 1/2 years, I will have gone twice in the span of seven days during May of 2016. Austin was a callin', and I answered!

A Hill Country Wedding at the Propect House - Dripping Springs, Texas

The reason for my first visit to Austin was to attend the wedding of two of my dear childhood friends, Joel and Jeff. (Fun fact: I slept on Joel and our friend Diego's couch/futon in their Harlem apartment during the first two months I lived in NYC, free of charge. Just to give you backstory on the kind-hearted people we're dealing with here. Also, those two months were a total blast, obvs.) The wedding took place this past weekend in Dripping Springs, and it was so lovely and special. So I'll give you guys a little recap of the trip!

Jon and I hit the road Saturday morning, and we made two detours to drop our pups off at their grandparents' houses.

After we got rid of the gremlins, we rode on for a while before stopping at our uszh spot Buc-ee's, this one located just before arriving in Austin:

Buc-ee's outside of Austin, Texas

We made it to Austin in time for lunch. Our original plan was to grab food at Hopdoddy, but since it was UT graduation weekend (a fact we had not realized prior to the trip), the place was more slammed than normal. I called my sister Emily and asked her where we should go. She recommended East Side King. After tons of traffic, hitting every red light, and about 27 expletives later (Sorry y'all, Austin traffic is way worse than Houston inner-loop traffic!), we walked around the main drag off campus aimlessly, confused as to where East Side King was.

Joke was on us because it closed down!!!!!

So we walked over to Cain & Abel's, a spot I am well familiar with from Emily's college days, and had some solid bar food. Jon had a burger and fries, and I had a spicy veggie burger with a fried egg on top, and a side salad.

After lunch, we fueled up on coffee and drove to our hotel, the gorgeous Sonesta, located in Bee Cave (about a half hour east of Austin). Once we checked in we were provided with an awesome (read: lifesaving) gift bag from Joel and Jeff!

We got ready for the wedding, hopped on the party bus, and headed to Dripping Springs for the main event!

Yes, Joel and Jeff somehow managed to get their own Snapchat filters because they're fancy like that!

This easily might have been the best wedding food I've ever had, because it was catered by Pappasito's! Um, hello, awesome much? And yes, what you're seeing above is AN AVOCADO BAR. I have officially died and gone to food heaven.

They also had a fajita bar set up, and were thoughtful enough to provide a vegetarian option, which was a plate of outstanding cheese enchiladas! Again, I died.

The venue where they had the wedding ceremony and reception is called Prospect House, and it is absolutely gorgeous. It has a minimalist, modern feel with ginormous windows, and the Hill Country views are beyond dreamy.

Here's a shot of the handsome grooms during their first dance.

A Hill Country wedding at Prospect House in Dripping Springs, Texas

Some of my other friends from my elementary/middle school/high school years who were also in attendance were Carla, Amy, Joe, and Carl. We danced the night away to Beyoncé and scored some fun pictures in the photo booth:

(You can see half of Joel's face in the top left corner. *sigh*, we tried.)

I also dragged my date in there:

The entire wedding was SO fun, and so love-filled, and such a wonderful celebration of two amazing people who make each other even more amazing!

It was SO fun in fact, that yours truly was a *wee* bit under the weather the next morning. So before we left Austin, we stopped at Tacodeli for some food in the form of tacos, aka my guardian angels.

I ordered the space cowboy taco (pictured above) and the bean and cheese taco, and I now officially see what all the Tacodeli fuss is about! Lucky us, since we'll be getting one in Houston soon!

All of our 24 hours in Austin were so wonderful (well, except for me dealing with the repercussions of one to many rosés), and I am so honored to have been a part of Joel and Jeff's special day. It was a jam-packed weekend, filled with reminiscing, catching up, eating good food, celebrating great love, and making wonderful memories!

See you in four days, Austin. *insert peace sign emoji*

Happy 2016, Houston!!!

Can I tell you a quick(ish) story? About how Apple is EVIL?

I've had my iPhone a while. It's given me zero problems (why I love Apple products even though they are Satan). Monday morning I went into a meeting. An hour later I came out to find my phone completely, 100%, not working and dead.

I took it to the Apple store (driving through Houston Galleria rush hour traffic, which is EVERYONE'S FAVORITE THING TO DO), where I waited over an hour to be seen (hey, self: always make an appointment). Genius Bar girl looks at my phone, tells me it's "bent," and that my battery will never ever work again. "Oh, wow, it says your warranty expired yesterday. What a strange coincidence! But I'd be happy to sell you a NEW IPHONE (!!!!!)"

Fortunately, I was contemplating switching plans (yes, I'm 30 years old and have been freeloading off of my parents' plan for years - why do you ask?), so I decided to sleep on the whole thing. WELL. After watching The Bachelor premiere (...you still there?), Jon walked in the room and said, "Your phone's working. I just had to hold the home button and the on button down for 20 seconds."

You're seriously telling me the Apple Geniuses don't know this trick?

Speaking of the Galleria.

^ (good to know my 2016 segues are off to an earth-shattering start!)

Over the holidays I met up with my mom one day for lunch at Adair Kitchen, a massive counter service restaurant located in Houston's Galleria/Uptown area. We stepped up to the packed and buzzing restaurant's counter to order our food, and the beyond-friendly employee informed us that they had switched their computers over to a new system that day, so to bear with him. Bear we did!

adair kitchen houston restaurants food lunch

Because it was a Tuesday, we ordered some wine. However, they ended up bringing my mom a glass of cabernet instead of the chardonnay she ordered. They were super apologetic and immediately corrected the problem (and made sure they hadn't overcharged us).

Houstonians are the nicest, ammiright??

My mom ordered the restaurant's super foods bowl and asked for the chicken on the side so I could have a taste (Thanks Mom!). Brown rice, kale, avocado, almonds, tomato, red onions, and cucumber were tossed in a sweet ginger miso dressing. Y'all, this was SO good (coming from an avid kale-hater). The fresh, crunchy veggies were softened up by the brown rice and avocado. The sweet, light dressing took the edge off of the bitter kale, and everything came together wonderfully. I loved this dish so much, I will probably order it next time!

For my main course of food, I ordered the black bean quinoa burger. However, what they brought out was a salad. Not to worry, once again they were incredibly nice and rushed to get my burger out to me.

In the meantime, we munched on some sweet potato fries!

^ (Look at my mom snapping away, she's totally a future food blogger.)

In actuality they left the sweet potato fries off our order. We had to ask for them again, and they brought them out quickly. They weren't very warm, but were still enjoyable. Lightly battered and fried, the dense sticks were sweet, salty, and tasty!

The restaurant's veggie burger wasn't too shabby either. The patty - clearly made in-house - had a smoother, more doughy texture than most. It was as if the ingredients had been pureed, then molded together. This softer patty was a unique departure from the norm, and I enjoyed it with the accompanying firm vegetables and avocado. The lightly dressed side salad included a playful sprinkling of feta, which also provided a slightly different experience.

Even though several mistakes were made with our food orders, the restaurant employees handled these errors calmly, speedily, and with total professionalism. I understand how rattling it can be to switch to a completely new computer system (especially in lieu of my recent technological issues), and I definitely appreciated how well everything was handled. Furthermore, the food at Adair Kitchen was pretty darn good - especially that power bowl! Light, thoughtful, healthy, and delicious, the food at this restaurant is a must-try if you're in Houston's Galleria area!

So, Houston, how do "phone plans" work? Asking for a friend...

Happy One (/Eleven) Year Anniversary Houston!

Friday, March 28, 2014
On March 31, 2013 I packed up my bags, bid NYC a final farewell, and returned home to my Texas motherland. So while I've *technically* lived in the greater Houston area for an accumulation of 11 years (because I was born here and did a large part of my growing up around these parts), I like to think of it as my 1 year anniversary since I had been away for 10 years.

That math may or may not add up. Go with it.

So, Happy (almost) 1 Year Anniversary Houston!!

To celebrate properly (with an homage to food, obvs.),  I have ranked my top 10 favorite Houston dishes I've had in the past year to reminisce/drool over and share with you all. So without further adieu here is my completely 100% biased opinion of my top 10 favorite dishes in Houston from the last 365 days.

Kim's Favorite Houston Dishes from the Past Year
 (dramatic large font absolutely necessary.)

#10: Butternut Squash Ravioli at Mr. Peeples (December 2013)

My friend Meredith and I went to Mr. Peeples for Happy Hour before seeing The Nutcracker, and it was the perfect pre-show spot. With a very decently priced Happy Hour menu, she and I were able to try a variety of small plates. The shining star of these dishes, in my opinion, was the Butternut Squash Ravioli. Savory! Sweet! Light! Hearty! Holy Moly Ravioli, it encompassed a whole slew of juxtaposing flavors and characteristics that made me exercise an obscene amount of restraint from licking the plate clean.

#9: Spinach and Artichoke Crostini at Oporto Wine Cafe (October 2013)

On my second friend date with my friend Megan (with whom I share a "bromance"), she introduced me to Oporto Wine Cafe's Happy Hour. Like Mr. Peeples, Oporto has a very inexpensive Happy Hour list. Unlike Mr. Peeples, there are about thirty different Happy Hour apps to choose from. Not even knowing where to begin, Megan said we absolutely had to get the Spinach and Aritichoke Crostini. Imagine the best spinach and artichoke dip you've ever had in your life but BETTER, put that dip onto a perfectly crispy crostini, add a dash of heaven, and that's what this is.

#8: Tots 'N Shots at Beavers (February 2014)

First off, I give Beaver's an A++ for creativity on this one. Tots 'N Shots, AKA green chile pimento cheese risotto "tots" with a bloody mary dipping sauce? Absolutely BRILLIANT. And not only are they brilliant, but the flavors are so interesting and delicious. When my best friend Courtney came from NYC to Houston for a visit, we shared this appetizer and fell completely in love. With the tots, not each other. Okay, maybe with each other. Tots have a way of igniting romance.

#7: Bread Service Appetizer at Roost (January 2014)

My bro Megan and I also went to Roost, where we not only experienced The Crazy Cauliflower Incident of My Life, but we also experienced the transcendence of their Bread Service Appetizer. Never quite the same, the bread of the day is served with three different butters and a cheese spread. For such a seemingly simple dish that would normally get overlooked, Roost sure has created a piece of art with this appetizer. There are so many delicious options and flavors involved in the Bread Service Appetizer, this is one dish you can't miss at Roost.

#6: Bangkok Fries at Boheme Cafe & Wine Bar (October 2013)

You know how leftover french fries are never good? Let's just say several days after eating lunch at Boheme with my mom, I was gorging on leftover Bangkok Fries from Boheme - cold and straight out of the container (how's that for a visual?) - for breakfast, several days after. AND THEY WERE JUST AS INCREDIBLE. The Bangkok Fries are trashed up, beautiful, they-shouldn't-be-good-but-dammit-if-they're-not-some-of-the-best-things-ever french fries. Filled with a smorgasbord of flavors (Sriracha! Minced pork! Crispy fried onions! Yellow curry mayo! Crushed sesame sticks! Cilantro! EXPLOSION!!!), they really are a force to be reckoned with. Absolutely phenomenal.

#5: Talleggio Florentine Pizza with Prosciutto at CRISP (July 2013)

And here we find ourselves in the Top 5! When my friend Lenny recommended CRISP to me over the summer, little did I know I was going to be literally dreaming about the Talleggio Florentine Pizza with prosciutto for months to come. This pizza is divine. Every bite was beyond pleasurable and utterly sensational. The taleggio cheese, creamy spinach, marinated artichoke, crispy onion, truffle oil, and prosciutto blended together in perfect harmony.

#4: Fillet Fajitas at El Tiempo (August 2013)

My friend Courtney claims that now that I've introduced her to the Fillet Fajitas at El Tiempo, all other fajitas have been ruined for her. And I wholeheartedly have to agree. The meat is so tender and perfect, you could eat it like a steak with a good glass of red wine. OR you could add their butter and Berry Sauce, load up your fixin's, wrap it in a fresh flour tortilla, and experience the most perfect fajita on God's green earth.

#3: Duck Salad at Brasil (July 2013)

Listen, I am absolutely not one to rave about a salad. In fact, the thought of having a salad as a whole meal annoys me. How sad for all parties involved, the eater and the eaten! But sometimes I go out on a limb and order a salad as an entree, and my whole world gets thrown out of orbit. Such is the case with the Duck Salad at Brasil. The tender duck is the main attraction, complimented perfectly by crisp red onions, creamy goat cheese, and tart blackberries. Every time I go back to Brasil I vow to try something new, but I always go back to this. I've sampled the dishes of friends and family there, but everything else pales in comparison. Light, yet indulgent, and absolutely perfect.

#2: Churrasco Steak at Américas (September 2013)

THIS STEAK, GAH. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The world-renowned Churrasco Steak at Américas is one phenomenal steak. I remember being completely dumbfounded as I cut through the steak with a butter knife. The Churrasco steak is cooked in a chimichurri seasoning and is so juicy I want to cry just thinking about it! (But I won't for your sake).

#1: Korean Braised Goat and Dumplings at Underbelly (July 2013)

My numero uno dish was an absolute no-brainer. Everything about Underbelly's Korean Braised Goat and Dumplings is simply exquisite. They have the perfect amount of spice, the perfect amount of sweet, the perfect amount of savory, and the perfect amount of varying textures - The dumplings are soft with an ever-so-slightly crisped exterior and the goat is melt-in-your-mouth tender. This carefully executed, delicate, stunning dish provides the diner with a complete otherworldly experience. Simply astounding.

Because I love not only food, but Houston food so much, I've got a whole slew of honorable mentions! Here they are in chronological order of having eaten:

From Left to Right: Caramel popcorn pot de crème & fried pretzel at Underbelly, Texas Turkey Sandwich at Spec's, El Gallo Dip at El Gallo, Bacon Bacon Burger at Christian's Tailgate, Perry's Famous Pork Chop at Perry's Steakhouse.

From Left to Right: BLT and Brie Sandwich at Chatter's Cafe & Bistro, Truffle Mushroom Pizza at Boheme Cafe & Wine Bar, Farmer's Market Ceviche at Benjy's, Toasted Supreme Bagel with Lox Spread at Hot Bagel Shop, and Fried (Dancing) Cauliflower at Roost.

So there you have it folks! My Best of Houston list from the past year of being back. It's been such an adventure trying so many new flavors and visiting so many interesting places. Thank you to everyone who has been reading along!

Happy 1 Year Anniversary, Houston - Here's to many more!
